Hard Tack Candy
Michael got this recipe from a co-worker. Be sure to have exhaust fan on when adding oil as the fumes are really strong.
1-3/4 cup sugar
1 cup water
3/4 cup light Karo syrup
1 dram flavored oil * food coloring
(use only 1/2 dram of clove)
Suggested colors:
Anise-blue
wintergreen-green
cinnamon-red
cloves-orange
root beer or sassafrass-brown;
spearmint-purple
lemon-yellow
Cook and stir sugar, water and corn syrup until sugar dissolves. Cook until hard crack stage (290-300 degrees). Remove from heat. Turn on exhaust fan; add flavored oil and food coloring. Pour onto cookie sheet packed with powdered sugar. Cool slightly and cut with scissors while still warm and pliable.
* Don't use immitation flavorings. Must use oils. Oils are available at a drug store pharmacy.
